The British appreciate a magazine --
I looked and couldn't come up with any hard numbers, but informal observation
tells me that there is a magazine for virtually any interest a person
may have in this fair kingdom.

I
have only just now discovered "The Digested Read," a feature
in the Guardian Books section that summarizes new books by summarizing
them in their own style. Here's
the one for Everything Bad is Good for You. It's an interesting
concept, but it seems inherently flawed in that since each "read"
is by definition a form of satire, the series lends itself to criticism,
but not praise. I think that if I ever had a novel published, I would
take it as a compliment if it was never covered in this feature...

Do
we hold depression up as something sacred? As something that actually
helps contribute to progress? One psychiatrist suspects
the answer is yes. But it's a trickier question to ask whether depression
actually is sacred, aside from any misguided perceptions we
may have.

I
really love this whole entry on what Michael Cunningham has to say about
almost
having moved to New Orleans in his twenties (via maudnewton.com
via kenfoster.blogspot.com). It brings up the perpetual warring desires
to live one's life and to "do something with it."

The
saga of the old Kokie's space in Williamsburg continues. It just gets
more
and more wholesome all the time...

Here
in London, the national news last night ran a ten-minute feature on
how to implement and utilize alternate energy sources. It covered the
subject on both a macro and micro level. It discussed costs, politics,
barriers, and on and on, until the viewer came to have a comprehensive
sense of the problems and solutions. Can you imagine seeing that on
Nightly News in America?! Not a chance!

Over here, the whole EU Constitution thing is a REALLY
big deal. I'd be curious to here from people back in the States if it's
being talked about much over there.

Posh Spice is very famous here.
