Culturally Speaking #35

By Sarah Stodola

Some skepticism over Gmail.

Ron Reagan's wrote a piece about President Bush for Esquire.  The perfectly crafted subheading reads: "The son of the fortieth president of the United States takes a hard look at the son of the forty-first and does not like what he sees."

One would think that Salon and Slate would consider each other primary competitors. So it reveals quite the oversight on the part of the Salon editors that the day after Christopher Hitchens appeared on Slate with an essay titled "Not So Swift," Arrianna Huffington appeared on Salon yesterday with an essay called, um, what was it again, oh yes, "Not So Swift." Exactly.

I probably even agree that Williamsburg is past its prime, but still, this has to be the stupidest article the Times has ever published.   I think the author failed to observe the fact that this kid wrote a completely unhip flyer, and that anyone who claims to have thrown the "dopest" parties is probably trying to compensate for the fact that in reality their parties sucked. Hipsters might be annoying, but still, they are hip, and they can spot a loser all the way from their own huge, unfinished, Williamsburg lofts, without trying to snag the one this guy is giving up.

Economists think Bush has screwed up the economy and would like to see Kerry give it a shot instead? Shocking!

I haven't read the review in the New York Review of Books titled "The Tragedy of Bill Clinton," but regardless of the content, it's not only stuffy, but also just plain silly, to try to call Clinton tragic.  The man is a lot of things, but it seems to me that tragic is probably actually the last thing that he is.
